Hangjun Lee is a filmmaker and curator who also works as a program director at EXiS festival in Seoul. His works are based on multi-projection and optical sound, focused on projector improvisation since the mid 2000s, collaborating with Ryu Hankil, Martin Tétreault, Jérôme Noetinger, Will Guthrie, Alan Corutis. His films have been shown at various venues, including the Issue Project Room(NY, USA), South Bank Centre & Cafe OTO (London, UK), BOZAR (Brussels, Belgium) and Netmage10 (Bologna, Italy) and have been distributed by Light Cone in Paris (France).
He also has curated screening and live media programs such as Cinematic Divergence (2013) and Mujanhyang (2014) for the National Museum of Contemporary Arts in Seoul and Embeddedness: Artist Films and Videos from Korea 1960’s to Now (2015) for the Tate Modern in London. Their collaboration stimulated critical investigations into the performativity of practices in the darkroom, the screening room, the private recording/ practicing studio, and the public performance spaces utilized for the improvising musician.

Phantom Schoolgirl Army Series
Strobe light kit, 16mm film strip, 16mm film projector
Phantom Schoolgirl Army is a powerful audiovisual performance based on a collection of military photographic portraits, and elaborates on the story of North Korean spies disguised as high school girls during the Yeosu-Suncheon rebellion of 1948. The South Korean government used this legend as anti-communist propaganda.
Nebula Rising Series #50-2
70mm & 35mm Film, Digital archive print, wood frame
35 2/5 × 23 3/5 in 90 × 60 cm
The Nebula Rising series is about tensile strengths of base and thickness of emulsion of film material. In the history of artisanal cinema we increasingly find meaningful practices like the Schmelzdahin group in Germany; erosion and permeation of chemical agents such as potassium and sodium produce a relentless archaeological and alchemical object of visual reference. The visual textbook is profound; we can see cracked and reticulated patterns, separations and concretions like mud cracks and salt lakes, and old handmade paper from mulberry trees. But this is just one element of the massive undertaking of making film (though I do not wish to mystify the universal image of the filmmaker). It is however, more like the science of dust, the rule of all time-consuming acts, which I cannot stop pursuing.
16mm film strip, light sources, 16mm projectors, PA
A possible statement of this work will be ‘if you produce this kind of noise, you have only to mount a filmstrip on to the sound reader, instead of relying on the standard instruction of operating the projector, and to pull it out.’ This might sound meaningless now, but it can be a document of film’s history and materiality when the social memory of film will disappear someday.
